Story intro

The film begins in 1927 by following the journey of a letter from Buckingham Palace to Downton Abbey. As the mail is being sorted and loaded onto the Mail Train in London, a stranger boards a carriage. The letter arrives at Downton Abbey, received by Andy, the footman and handed over to Thomas Barrow, the Butler. Robert Crawley, The Earl of Grantham, is given the mail as soon as he comes downstairs for breakfast with Lady Mary Talbot (his daughter) and Tom Branson (his son-in-law). Robert reads the letter and announces that King George V and Queen Mary are coming to Downton as part of a royal tour through the country. The stranger who boarded the train has arrived in Downton Village and books a room overlooking the village greens. Queen Mary's Lady-in-Waiting, Lady Maud Bagshaw, is the cousin of Lord Grantham, however the two families have fallen out due to her not naming Robert her legal heir. She requests that she go straight on, rather than stay at Downton Abbey, to which the Queen suggests her mending the family connection. The Dowager Countess of Grantham is told by her son Robert, that Bagshaw is coming to Downton. She is shocked and perturbed by the news. Violet believes Robert is being cheated out of a rightful inheritance. The Royal Staff arrive; including the Royal Page of the Backstairs, who the Downton staff refer to as the Royal butler, the Queen's Royal Dresser and the King's Royal Dresser named Mr. Richard Ellis. Barrow is caught off guard by the arrogance of the Royal Butler and his accompanying staff. Mary is convinced Barrow is not stepping up to the mark and requests Mr Carson, the now retired former butler of Downton Abbey, return temporarily. Tom is approached by the stranger who introduces himself as Major Chetwode and questions Tom's loyalties. Barrow, outraged about being replaced, makes his feelings clear in a moment of rare candor between Thomas and Lord Grantham. As he leaves the room he informs them that the boiler is broken and there is no hot water. Mary asks if he'll sack Barrow. Robert however, impressed with Thomas's integrity, states that he never thought of Barrow "as a man of principle."
