What is The Call of the Wild about?

During the Gold Rush, a large yet playful domesticated St. Bernard/Scotch Collie hybrid dog named Buck lives happily in his Santa Clara, California home with his master, Judge Miller. Due to Buck's reckless nature, he is forced to spend another evening outside of Miller's home. Shortly afterward, he is kidnapped and shipped all the way to the Yukon in a large freighter while being ill-treated by one of the workers on the ship. After arriving there, he returns a fallen Harmonica to a man named John Thornton, moments before he is sold to a man named Perrault and his female assistant named Françoise. Both travel using a dog sled while delivering mail to individuals across the Yukon. Perrault hopes to make it on time to the mail deposit out across the land before the bell tolls. Buck is introduced to the other dogs, including the vicious leader of the pack, who is a Husky named Spitz.
Throughout their travels, Buck gains the loyalty and trust of Françoise and the other sled dogs, which angers Spitz. He also starts seeing a spiritual embodiment of his ancestors; a black wolf who acts as his guide throughout their travels. One night, Buck chases a white rabbit up a hill. After he catches the rabbit and sets it free, Spitz kills it and then attacks him to assert his dominance as leader of the pack. Buck counters this and pins Spitz down, leaving the disgraced pack leader humiliated. Spitz then walks off into the wild, never to return. An agitated Perrault begrudgingly replaces Spitz with Buck as head of the pack when the other dogs refuse to do so themselves. Buck's speed and strength allow the sled to arrive at the mail deposit on time, much to the joy of Perrault. There, Thornton is able to hand in an envelope with a letter he wrote to his ex-wife regarding his inner thoughts on the grieving of their late son. When the sled returns, the entire pack is bought from Perrault by a corrupt wealthy man named Hal, who works the dogs to exhaustion by forcing them to travel with a heavy load of luggage on the sled.
