What is All the Bright Places about?

Teenagers Violet Markey (Elle Fanning) and Theodore Finch (Justice Smith) attend the same high school in Bartlett, Indiana. Violet is reeling from the death of her sister in a car accident while Finch is on probation in danger of not graduating. The two come together and grow closer when they are paired up for a school project in which they are required to report on the wonders of Indiana. Violet shuts herself out from Finch at first, but as they travel to areas for their project, she begins to open up to him. They eventually fall in love and start exclusively being a couple. The entire school has their eyes on them and one of Violet's friends tries telling her that Finch is an "uncontrollable freak" which she ignores, but when Finch is confronted and pushed to the edge, it instigates a fight that brings out his rage. Violet, now stunned and shocked doesn't know what to say. Finch begins to push Violet away, thinking that she believed that he was insane. Violet tries talking to him and letting him know that she's there for him, just as he was there for her. Unfortunately, that effort backfires and Finch tells her to leave. Sad and heartbroken, Violet leaves in tears and an equally heartbroken Finch breaks down and eventually commits suicide at the lake where he and Violet once swam. Grieving his death, Violet goes to the places they've been for their project and reminisces the love that they both shared.
