Milla Finlay (Eliza Scanlen) is a mature and intelligent high-school student suffering from a terminal illness. While waiting for her train home, she meets Moses (Toby Wallace), who reveals he had been kicked out of the house. The two of them become unlikely acquaintances.
Milla's parents are Henry and Anna (Essie Davis). Henry works as a psychiatrist and Anna is one of his clients, as she takes drugs to cope with her daughter's illness.
As he has nowhere to stay, Milla brings Moses home to meet her family. At the dinner table, inebriated by taking too high a dosage of her medication, Anna blurts out that she is put off by her young daughter interacting with a 23-year-old Moses.
Milla takes violin lessons from her tutor, Gidon (Eugene Gilfedder). He helps her practice along with a neighbor boy named Tin Wah (Edward Lau). Meanwhile, Henry is unsettled by the new neighbour across the road constantly calling his name. He decides to confront her during his walk to work one morning. She introduces herself as Toby (Emily Barclay), and is shown to be pregnant. She apologises for the shouting, as she is looking for her dog. They share a laugh after Henry explains that he and the dog share a name.
Milla undergoes chemotherapy, losing her hair. Moses comments that the haircut was "better than the one he gave her".
One night, Moses breaks into Milla's house to look for food and other things. Anna catches him and he threatens her with a meat prong. She calmly tries to talk him down, even aiding him by saying where the prescriptions were, but Moses remains on-edge. Henry and Milla come in and witness the scene. Milla steps in to defuse the situation and suggests that Moses stay for breakfast since it was almost morning. Henry and Anna agree and have breakfast with Moses. After breakfast, Milla shows off her new wig, which Moses likes. She then heads to school.
