In 895, King Aurvandill War-Raven (Ethan Hawke) returns to his kingdom on the Irish coast from his conquests overseas and reunites with his wife Queen Gudrún (Nicole Kidman), and his son and heir, Prince Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård). Having returned from battle injured, Aurvandill decides to bestow his responsibilities to Amleth. The two take part in a spiritual ceremony overseen by Aurvandill's friend Heimir. During which they consume a hallucinogenic substance and engage in animalistic trance like behavior. Amleth taps into powerful visions of his lineage. The following morning, masked warriors sent by Aurvandill's brother Fjölnir ambush the King and murder him, with Fjölnir striking the final blow and seizing his kingdom along with Gudrún. Fjölnir's housecarl Finnr attempts to kill Amleth, but the boy cuts off Finnr's nose and escapes by boat, but not before seeing his village massacred and his mother being carried away screaming by his uncle.
Amleth is eventually found by a band of Vikings and raised among them as a berserker. Following a raid in the lands of the Rus', Amleth encounters a Seeress (Björk) in a Slavonic temple of the Svetovit deity; the Seeress foretells Amleth will soon have the opportunity to take vengeance against Fjölnir. Amleth learns from the berserker Eirikr that Fjölnir has been overthrown by Harald of Norway and lives in exile in Iceland. Amleth smuggles himself aboard a ship taking slaves to Fjölnir. On board, he encounters a Slavic slave named Olga, who claims she is a sorceress. On arrival, Amleth and the rest of the slaves are taken to Fjölnir's farm, where it is revealed that Fjölnir and Queen Gudrún, now his wife, has in-turn produced him a son, Gunnar (Elliott Rose).
